My mother was a Smith.
I am researching my great grandparents.
I found a note by my Grandfather on his
Father's U.S. naturalization papers that referenced "near Preston".
My great-grandfather was James Smith
b.1849, who married Alice Fidler and
immigrated to the U.S. around 1872-73.
My mother and all of her Smith-connected
relatives are deceased and there is not
much of a paper trail.
Would love any information or connections.
I have had extended stays in the U.K.,
(always wonderful by the way) and would
really like to know the family history.

Some of my forebears came to South
Australia from Givendale Grange in the
Parish of Ripon in the West Riding of
Yorkshire. They arrived here in August
1839. Others came in 1856.
Several of our families lived at either
Givendale Grange, Great Givendale or
Little Givendale on the Newby Hall estate.
They were tenant farmers and it appears
that various generations farmed there for
over 100 years.
Some others of our family farmed in the North Riding at Humberton-cum-Milbyin the Parish of Kirby on the Moor (Kirby Hill). The earliest records I have show Smiths in the area from c.1700.
Various family members lived at times in a number of places including those already mentioned and .........
Westwick, Nunwick, Sharow, Boroughbridge, Knaresborough, Hutton Moor, Skelton, Blois Hall, Hutton Conyers, Ripon, Copt Hewick and Kirby Hill.
Christian names in the family include
Jacob, Richard, Robert, Thomas, James, Henry and Joseph for the males and for the ladies, Ruth, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, Lydia, Charlotte and Eleanor.
In many cases, the first son was Jacob and the first daughter was Mary. An interesting point, a number of Jacobs married a Mary.
This information gives a bit of a lead for anyone who thinks we may be related. I would some members write to me and say that we are.

I am searching for Smiths who lived in and around the St Albans Area of Blackburn. That is Daisy Street, Cleaver Street, Primrose Bank, Trinity Street, Moss Street, Cob Wall
and all streets in between.
I still live in this area so even if the streets are gone the Smiths remain.
Looking from 1880 to present day.
Starting with George Smith of Cowling, West Riding Yorkshire, and his wife Margaret Maxwell of Glasgow.

Associated Names are Maxwell, Ganley

Thomas Hamilton Smith from England to Australia some time after 1871. He was a master mariner and sea captain,
Thomas' father was the Reverent Daniel Smith who was born in Colne, Lancashire,
and his father was Thomas Smith a cotton manufacturer I think from Colne, and he married Mary Knight.
I would like to be able to find out more
information on Thomas Smith.

Henry Smith, b1850-1852 ought to be born Thornhill but I can't find him at all. He was the son of James Smith.
Henry married Isabella Butcher.
His father James may well have died in his early life, mid 40-50's. I cannot find his birthplace either. The Butchers came from Kirkburton to Thornhill. Did the Smiths as well?
One thing is certain, the Smiths moved to Thornhill from elsewhere. Question is from where?
Can anyone fill in those gaps? |
